In Berlin, we celebrate freedom. We know what it means to tear down walls. Thousands of kilometers away, in Tanzania, one of the country's bravest voices is being silenced behind bars. During Berlin Freedom Week, we are taking a standโfor Tundu Lissu.
A lifetime dedicated to justice, democracy, and the people of Tanzania
Tundu Lissu is no ordinary prisoner. He is a lawyer, a human rights defender, and the Chairman of Tanzania's main opposition party (CHADEMA).
His entire life, he has fearlessly fought against corruption and for democracy.
This fight almost cost him his life. In 2017, he survived a brutal assassination attempt, being shot 16 times. They wanted to silence him, but after years in exile, he returned to Tanzania to continue his struggle.
The Injustice: Detained Since April 10, 2025
Since April 10, 2025, Tundu Lissu has once again been robbed of his freedom. He was arrested on flimsy, politically motivated charges.
His imprisonment is a clear attack on free speech and an attempt to intimidate the opposition in Tanzania. He is a political prisoner.
Berlin, Take a Stand!
Berlin Freedom Week reminds us that freedom is never guaranteed. It must be defended every single dayโeverywhere. When a voice like Tundu Lissu's is suppressed, it is an attack on the freedom of us all.
